The Simple Packing Method That Helped Me Stop Overpacking for Beach Trips

A few years ago, I was sitting on the floor beside an overstuffed suitcase the night before a beach trip trying to force the zipper closed with my knee.
There were clothes everywhere.
Too many sandals. Too many “just in case” outfits. Random tops I hadn’t worn in months but suddenly thought I might need on vacation. Somehow I had packed multiple swimsuits, extra hoodies, and enough outfits for a trip twice as long as the one we were actually taking.

Meanwhile, I already knew what I’d probably end up wearing most of the time anyway.
Comfortable shorts. Oversized tees. Easy tank tops. The same pair of sandals I always wear.
We drive on our trips instead of flying, which somehow made me justify packing even more stuff because technically there was room for it. But by the time we’d spend ten hours in the car with bags shoved everywhere, half the clothes stayed untouched the entire trip anyway.
And unpacking all of it when we got home was miserable.
At some point I realized I was packing for imaginary versions of the trip instead of the trip we actually take.
That’s when I started using the 54321 packing method.
It’s basically a simple way to create a travel capsule wardrobe using pieces that all work together. Since I naturally stick to neutral basics and comfortable outfits anyway, this
method completely changed the way I pack for beach vacations.
Now I pack lighter, have more outfit combinations, and getting dressed during trips feels way easier.
What Is the 54321 Packing Method?
The 54321 packing method is a simple packing formula that helps you pack lighter without feeling like you have nothing to wear.
The formula is:
5 tops
4 bottoms
3 pairs of shoes
2 layering pieces or dresses
1 set of accessories
The goal is to choose versatile pieces that can all mix and match together so you can make multiple outfits without overpacking.

Honestly, it sounds almost too simple at first, but it works surprisingly well.
Why This Method Works So Well for Beach Vacations
Beach trips always used to make me overpack the worst.
I’d think I needed separate outfits for dinners, beach days, walking around town, stopping for ice cream, random shopping trips, and whatever other imaginary vacation scenarios I made up in my head while packing.
In reality, I mostly reach for the same comfortable outfits over and over again.
Especially when it’s hot outside.
Now I focus more on pieces that are lightweight, easy to rewear, comfortable for long car rides, and simple to throw together without thinking too hard about it.
That alone makes vacations feel less stressful.
The 5 Tops I Usually Pack
For tops, I try to keep things simple and comfortable.
Most of what I pack are oversized tees, basic tank tops, lightweight ribbed tops, and loose button-downs that can double as swimsuit coverups.

I also try to make sure everything feels comfortable enough for a long drive because if something annoys me sitting in a vehicle for ten hours, I already know I’m not going to wear it much during the trip either.
That’s honestly become one of my biggest packing rules.
If it wrinkles horribly, feels stiff, rides up constantly, or only works for one outfit, it usually stays home now.
The 4 Bottoms That Actually Get Worn
I used to pack way too many bottoms because I thought I needed tons of options.
Turns out I really don’t.
Now I usually stick with a few pairs of denim shorts, linen shorts, relaxed pants, and one comfortable pair of casual bottoms for driving days or cooler evenings.

The biggest thing that helped me was making sure every bottom works with almost every top.
That sounds obvious, but I definitely wasn’t doing that before.
I used to pack random pieces that only worked with one specific outfit, which just created more clutter in my suitcase.
The 3 Pairs of Shoes I Actually Need
Shoes used to take up half my suitcase.
Now I try to keep it simple with one comfortable sandal, one pair of flip flops, and one casual sneaker or slip-on shoe.

That’s usually more than enough for beach trips.
I also stopped packing shoes just because they looked cute with one outfit.
Vacation me is almost always choosing comfort over “fashion pain” after walking around in the heat all day anyway.
And honestly, some sandals are only cute until you’ve walked across a parking lot in them once.
The 2 Extra Pieces That Make the Biggest Difference
This category usually changes depending on the trip, but I almost always pack some kind of lightweight layer.
Even beach vacations end up chilly at night sometimes, especially sitting outside near the water.
Most trips, I bring a lightweight cardigan or oversized sweatshirt and either a casual dress or a loose button-up layer I can throw over swimsuits.

Those pieces end up getting worn constantly because they make outfits feel different without needing an entire second wardrobe.
The 1 Set of Accessories
I keep accessories really simple now.
Usually I just bring sunglasses my makeup, simple jewelry, and maybe a hat.
I used to overpack accessories too, but now I’d rather keep things easy and not dig through fifty little zipper pockets looking for stuff.
Less clutter just makes the whole trip feel calmer honestly.

What Finally Helped Me Stop Overpacking
The biggest thing that changed my mindset was realizing I don’t actually wear as many different outfits as I think I will on vacation.
I naturally grab the same comfortable pieces over and over again.
Once I stopped packing for imaginary situations and started packing for the trips we actually take, everything got easier.
Now I’d rather have a smaller suitcase full of clothes I genuinely love wearing than drag around a bunch of extra stuff I probably won’t touch.
The 54321 packing method completely changed the way I pack for beach trips.
Packing feels less stressful, outfits are easier to throw together, and I’m not coming home with half my suitcase untouched anymore.
And honestly, not having to sit on top of my suitcase trying to force it shut the night before a trip has been a nice bonus too.
